Super Capacitors (SC), is also called Ultra Capacitors, SUCs are high-capacity capacitor, with a capacitance value max 3000F but with lower voltage limits 2.7V dc/2.8V dc. It bridges the gap between electrolytic capacitors and rechargeable batteries. It typically stores 10 to 100 times more energy per unit volume or mass than electrolytic capacitors, and can charge/discharge much faster than batteries, and tolerates many more charge and discharge cycles than rechargeable batteries.
Super Capacitors are used in applications requiring many rapid charge/discharge cycles, rather than long-term compact energy storage, meaning it is used in heavy discharge environments, (Spot welding) rather than sustained discharge devices like LED emitters etc.
Scope:
For DIY enthusiasts, these SUCs are very successful in operating Spot Welding jobs. So the description will be based on that.
When SUCs arrive. They come in total discharged condition. Be aware of that. No SUCs are shipped fully charged due safety reasons and LAW.
DO NOT RETURN SUCs to the vender because of ZERO reading on DMM. THE BUYER IS REQUIRED TO CHARGE THE SUCs TO THE SPECIFICATION.
Technical: (Charging Buyer’s responsibility)
If obtaining MAXWELL SUC use a charger with CC/CV capability. This is utmost important. Meaning MAXWELL SUC required to be charged @2.7Vdc/2.5~3.5A, this is not a rule but gradual charging maintains longevity of the SUC. If charging cells initially, it’s highly recommended that each SUC is charged individually and once they are fully charged @2.7Vdc; top balance the SUCs, as practiced in Li-Ion/LiFePo4 cells. (Buyer’s responsibility.)
3S-4S or multiple SUCs charging: (Buyer’s responsibility)
It is very highly recommended to use a suitable BMS in the above configuration. It’s beyond the scope of seller to implement the rules as to how this is performed. (Research online for info.)
